DESCRIPTION:The only thing better than an evening with the dazzling Sunshine Orchestra is an evening with the Orchestra and an appearance by its visionary founder: legendary composer and Academy Award winner AR Rahman\, live on stage. \nThe Sunshine Orchestra is comprised of gifted young musicians from under-resourced communities who receive world-class training in association with AR Rahman’s KM Music Conservatory in Chennai\, India. Under his mentorship\, they have transformed into a powerhouse ensemble\, performing with passion and purpose. \nMaking their Canadian debut\, The Sunshine Orchestra presents the diverse spirit of Indian music ranging from the enchantment of ragas through to the dazzle of Bollywood\, the soul of Sufi and the wisdom of Carnatic; and of course a tribute to their founder and mentor. Under the direction of Gerardo Sanchez Lara and Lisa Sarasini\, featuring guest vocalists from KM Music Conservatory this promises to be a night to remember. \nIt is the mandate of The AR Rahman Foundation through The Sunshine Orchestra to provide free musical training to young musicians who otherwise would not have access\, in order to endow them with confidence\, career\, life skills and a strong sense of teamwork. They explore both Indian and Western traditions with a mission as inspiring as their sound: use music as a force for good. Since its founding in 2008\, the Orchestra has performed around the world\, including a special concert at the United Nations\, earning acclaim for their moving story. \nToday\, the Sunshine Orchestra comprises of professional string and brass sections\, with woodwind and percussion divisions currently in development. Alongside them is a growing junior orchestra\, nurtured through the mentorship and training of our faculty and senior students. The Orchestra actively gives back to the community through impactful outreach initiatives\, including free government school workshops funded by the ABRSM Play On! Grant. Many of our senior musicians now take on leadership roles by mentoring and teaching the next generation—building a sustainable ecosystem of talent and opportunity. \nSupported by the Living Arts Centre
