About Jeannie Hunter

MusiCounts teacher of the year for 2025, Jeannie Hunter is currently head of Special Education and Fine Arts at Nepean High School in Ottawa, Jeannie Hunter has taught instrumental music, percussion, vocal music, band, choir, guitar, piano, orchestra. jazz and music for community living over the past 30 years. The recipient of an OCDSB Director’s Award, she is also a two-time recipient of the OCDSB Arts Advisory Committee award. In 2015 Jeannie’s students won the title of ‘Canada’s Greatest Music Class’ and continued to be successful in the CBC Music Class Challenge. She was awarded, ‘Best Percussion Section’ at Canada’s Musicfest, “The Nationals’ for her work developing Nepean’s 20 member percussion ensemble.

A career-long advocate for equity, diversity and inclusion, Jeannie was the founding director of Brookfield High School’s ‘World Voices Choir’ which partnered with social justice organizations to use music as a tool for social change. As a past instructor with Ottawa’s Orkidstra, Jeannie taught students ages 5 to 18, and as a community music educator has worked with singers ages 5 to 90. Jeannie holds the portfolio for community connections as a board member with the Ontario Music Educators’ Association, as well as being a clinician, conference delegate, and contributor to the OMEA journal, ‘The Recorder.”

Jeannie’s students have shared the stage with notable Canadian musicians such as the National Arts Centre Orchestra, Johnny Reid, Jully Black, Susan Aglukark, Crown Lands and Serena Ryder, among others.
