About Dr. Gottfried Schlaug

Dr. Gottfried Schlaug, MD, PhD, is Professor of Neurology at UMass Chan Medical School–Baystate and a vascular neurologist at Baystate Health in Springfield, Massachusetts. He is also Scientific Director of the Human Magnetic Resonance Center (hMRC) and Adjunct Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. A pioneer in research at the intersection of music and the brain, his work focuses on neuroplasticity, stroke recovery, aphasia therapy (including melodic intonation therapy), and noninvasive brain stimulation; earlier in his career he led the Music, Neuroimaging and Stroke Recovery laboratories at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center/Harvard Medical School.
